Like many other ‘nuts,’ pistachios are actually technically a seed because they grow inside the pistachio tree’s drupe. As the drupe dries, it forms a hard hull around the edible pistachio seed within, making it appear like a nut! Pistachio is a desert plant and is highly tolerant of saline soil. It has been reported to grow well when irrigated with water having 3,000–4,000 ppm of soluble salts.
